Once you get your fix watching the biplane, formula one, sport, t-6, jet and unlimited classes compete at the National Championship Air Races and Air Show this week, the organizers have come up with an event lineup that will be the icing on the aerobatic cake. Here is just a taste of the fun that awaits at the Reno-Stead Airport.
Shows in the sky
As the pilots take a break from circling pylons at incredible speeds, catch an air show by the Blue Angels, the United States Navy’s Flight Demonstration Squadron. The white-knuckle performances include the Blue Angels’ C-130 (affectionately known as Fat Albert), graceful maneuvers by the four-jet Diamond Formation, fast-paced, adrenaline-pumping tricks from two solo pilots and a six-jet Delta Formation grand finale.
How about a daring sky dive? You got it, thanks to the Wings of Blue United States Air Force Academy Jump Team. Watch as Jim Peitz performs in his Beechcraft F33C Bonanza — he’ll turn heads as he loops, rolls, hammerheads and blows a little smoke. The Smoke ‘n Thunder Jet Car, Lucas Oil Pitts and F-35 are also bringing something to the party as they fly through their appearances during the big event.
On the ground, the static display of military aircraft offers a peek inside the C-17 Globemaster III, C-130 Hercules, F-15 Eagle, A-10 Warthog, F-35 Lightning II, CH-47 Chinook Helicopter and more.
Grub and goodies
The lineup of food and drink vendors this year will not disappoint. Look for concessions around the field. Try a plate or two from favorite local kitchens and food trucks, or grab an icy lemonade, cold beer or other refreshing treat.
Head to the exhibitor area where you can peruse the latest in aircraft part manufacturing, flight schools and home improvement services. Find that perfect souvenir with vendors ranging from aviation art and military collectibles to pre-packaged foods, calendars and eye wear. Don’t forget to pickup a shirt, hat, sticker or other token to commemorate the experience.
New live tunes
For the first time in the event’s 53-year history, the Reno Air Races Association will host concerts following the final air race on Friday and Saturday night. The Nick Lawrence Band will bring some Texas country music with a twist of southern and alternative rock to the stage Friday. This band has opened shows for George Strait, Gary Allen and Diamond Rio.
Saturday night will feature The Juantanamos performing some of rock’s biggest hits, songs from their debut album “Ghost Tracks,” their upcoming album and a surprise special guest sure to bring down the hangar!
