Step back in time and capture the family-friendly holiday spirit with a trip to historic Virginia City for

Christmas on the Comstock. The holiday celebration begins Dec. 5 with a few events Nov. 27-29.

“Christmas on the Comstock is not just one day. It’s a month-long celebration that feels like how Christmas is supposed to be,” said Deny Dotson, tourism director for the Virginia City Tourism Commission. “If you want to have a fun family excursion away from the hustle and bustle, a trip to Virginia City is well worth your while.”

Boutique holiday shopping: Explore shops such as Forever Christmas, From the World and many more for distinctive gifts. December hours vary. Details: Virginia City shopping.

Photos with Father Christmas: Stop by the Virginia City Visitors Center, 86 S. C St., to meet Father Christmas for a photograph. Hours are from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 27-29, Dec. 4-6, Dec. 11-13 and Dec. 18-20. Call 775-847-7500.

The Candy Cane Express Trains: Create holiday memories aboard the Candy Cane Express Holiday Train on the Virginia & Truckee Railroad. Visit with the Candy Cane Sisters while sipping hot chocolate or spiced apple cider and enjoying cookies and candy canes. Trains run Nov. 27-29, Dec. 5-6 and Dec. 12-13. Tickets are $13 for ages 13 and older, and $7 for ages 2-12. Tickets can be purchased online.

Christmas on the Comstock Parade of Lights: Bundle up and gather along C Street at 5 p.m. Dec. 5 and watch as the town lights up with Christmas cheer.

Christmas in the Sierra Concert: Bring your cowboy boots and Santa hat for a country Christmas concert Dec. 5 by David John & the Comstock Cowboys at Piper's Opera House. Concert starts at 7:30p.m. Doors open at 6:30p.m. Price: $25. Tickets can be purchased online.
