Editor's picks: November foodie edition
I usually write about what to do this weekend. But, with events season behind us and Thanksgiving looming ahead, I decided this week to instead focus on some food-focused happenings around town to think about in the upcoming week or so. There are two food-focused events coming up at the Atlantis Casino Resort Spa, the Eldorado Resort Casino's pastry shop is offering preorders for holiday pies and Charlie Palmer Steak in the Grand Sierra Resort and Casino is offering a twist on Thanksgiving restaurant service.
Turkey and the trimmings at Charlie Palmer
Don’t feel like dining out but want to provide something gourmet for your friends and family at home? Chef David Holman of Charlie Palmer in the GSR will be cooking whole birds for your Thanksgiving table. Preorder a free range Diestel turkey today, along with the full range of classic Thanksgiving dishes and sides and a pie cart to take to-go. Details: 775-789-2456.
Eldorado pies for Thanksgiving
Perhaps you just want to skip the holiday baking? If so, head to the Sweet Shoppe & Bakery at Millies24 inside the Eldorado, which is offering a Thanksgiving dessert preorder menu with hassle-free curbside pick up. Pies available for preorder include bourbon pecan deep dish, harvest pumpkin deep dish and Dutch apple pie. Each pie is 9 inches and serves eight people, ranging from $12.95 to $18.95. Pumpkin cheesecake also is available for $38, which serves 16 people. Orders must be placed by noon Nov. 23 with easy pickup curbside in front of the Eldorado on Sierra Street. Whiskeys of the World dinner
Atlantis Casino Resort Spa’s Bistro Napa is holding a Whiskies of the World Dinner at 6 p.m. Nov. 19. During the course of the dinner, guests will enjoy samplings from Japan, Scotland, Canada and the U.S., and will learn about the nuanced national styles of production, flavor and body. The menu includes: first course of Irish crab and potato “boxty cake” with jumbo lump crab, Irish potatoes and herb aioli paired; wood-fired barramundi with black fig and olive tapenade, grilled artichokes, wilted greens and beurre rouge; crisp Scotch egg with Scottish cheddar and house-pickled vegetables; slow-braised beef cheek with caramelized onion and bacon tart, and roasted winter root vegetables and a red wine reduction. For dessert, guests will tuck into Nutella and banana-filled aebleskivers and caramel gelato. Dinner costs $95 per person, is all-inclusive, and reservations can be made by calling 775-824-4411.
Winter Wine & Ski Expo
The Winter Wine & Ski Expo is always a fun event -- walk around tasting great wines and beers as well as samples of delicious food -- and it's a fun event whether you're into winter sports or not. The 15th annual Winter Wine & Ski Expo runs from 6 to 9 p.m. Nov. 19 in Atlantis’ Grand Ballroom. Winter Wine & Ski participants can enjoy fine wine sampling, beer from local microbreweries and dishes from local restaurants. Winter sports gear donated by Scheels, wine and holiday gifts will be available for bid during the silent auction, and all attendees will be eligible for a chance to win a wheelbarrow filled with wine. Tickets cost $40 in advance, $50 at the door, and may be purchased at the Atlantis Gift Shop, by calling 888-551-7007, at www.mscando.org/WWSE or at Scheels Customer Service.
