This weekend is full of fun events like Redrun III -- Return of the Living Dead in Virginia City, the Fall Harvest Festival at Aces Ballpark and the Eldorado Great Italian Festival.

Spring and fall are my favorite seasons, and in Northern Nevada, they're the shortest. Springs gentle breezes are soon replaced by summer's blazing temperatures, and in the fall, the fiery falling leaves quickly fade into freezing temperatures and hopefully this year, snow. Now is the time to get out and explore Lake Tahoe's trails or enjoy the cooler temperatures in downtown Reno.

This weekend is full of fun events -- more than I have time to write about this week, so let's dive right in.

Redrun III -- Return of the Living Dead

I have a distinct love-hate relationship with scary movies that tends toward the hate side -- they scare the crap out of me. But, around Halloween I like to watch the classic scary movies like "Halloween" with Jamie Lee Curtis or "The Night of the Living Dead." So, I'd head to Virginia City on Saturday morning for the Redrun III, a zombie obstacle run through old Nevada mining town Virginia City. I think I'd be so scared I'd run the fastest race of my life! There are two options, a 3.3-mile or 6.6-mile race. Runners, zombies and living dead registrants encounter various historic and spooky landmarks throughout the course, including the V&T Train Graveyard, Virginia City’s China Town, the Yellow Jacket Mine and more. Register here.

Fall Harvest Festival

What's good right after a run? Why a beer, of course. I'd head to Aces Ballpark for the inaugural Fall Harvest Festival because how often does one get the chance to hang out on the field at the ballpark? Not too often. More than 25 breweries from around the state will be pouring at the festival, which runs from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday.Breweries from Las Vegas, Tonopah, Lake Tahoe, Truckee and Reno, including local favorites like Under the Rose Brewing Co., The Depot and Brasserie St. James will be there as well as food trucks like Nom Eats, Schnitzel, Electric Blue Elephant, Burger Me and Brothers Barbecue. Eldorado Great Italian Festival

The Italian Festival is the last big festival of special-events season in Northern Nevada. If you love Italian food and culture, this is the place to be. Head downtown to Virginia Street between Second and Fifth streets from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. There will be an Italian farmers market, dozens of food, beverage and craft booths, a gelato-eating contest for children, a wine walk, grape stomping and more, plus the sauce cook-off, which I judged for several years. This is a great event for the whole family -- there's enough to do even for my toddler!
