Editor's picks: Persian wine dinner, Reno Air Races
We're in the midst of special-events season in Northern Nevada with the National Championship Air Races, Street Vibrations, Camel Races, the Eldorado Great Italian Festival and Fantasies in Chocolate. And this year, there's a new event to look forward to -- the World's Championship Chili Cookoff Oct. 16-18 at the Grand Sierra Resort and Casino. I'm from Texas, so I have a strong opinion about chili -- and barbecue -- but more on that in a future post.
There are some great events hitting Reno this week and into the weekend, including An Evening with Johnathan Wright, the Reno Air Races running today through Sunday and "Saltoriya" showing at the Eldorado Theatre.
An Evening with Johnathan Wright
Tonight is your chance to listen to the RGJ's food and drink editor Johnathan Wright wax poetic about Persian food. I've attended several of Johnathan's dinners, as he's a friend and colleague, and he always manages to be informative, accessible and entertaining, all at the same time. And, the food at the Atlantis is dope, y'all. The Accent on Persia Spirited Wine Dinner featuring Darioush Winery starts at 6 p.m. tonight at the Atlantis Steakhouse. Also, Darioush makes fantastic wine -- if you haven't visited the ornate Napa winery, you should -- it's a must-see.
Reno National Championship Air Races
My almost 2-year-old is obsessed with airplanes and helicopters, but mostly airplanes. She can spot a jet up in the blue sky when I can barely see it, and loves the smaller planes that fly low overhead. I've never been to the Reno Air Races for one reason or another, but think this is the year, accompanied by my kiddo.
Who doesn't love the circus? "Saltoriya," showing at the Eldorado Resort Casino's theater, features awe-inspiring acts like an elegant hand balancer, two motorcycles riding in the "globe of death," a performer who walks on cut glass and eats fire and more. The show's creator, Misha Matorin, used to perform with Cirque du Soleil -- let's just say he knows what he's doing.
That's it for this weekend! Enjoy the (hopefully cool and fall-like) weather, and I'll catch you here next week.
