What's new at the Sand's Farmer's Market
Whether you are looking for handmade dishes, toys for the kids or to stock up on fresh vegetables before you drive home, the the Sands Regency hotel welcomes you to each week this summer for their farmers' market. Previously located in Sparks, this is the first year the downtown Reno hotel
Partnering with Shirley's Farmers' Markets, the Sands will offer the only completely covered, outdoor, 10,000 square foot market site in the Reno-Sparks area. No matter whether a late afternoon rain storm hits or the sun is blazing down, shoppers will be covered while they shop. Every Thursday, from 4pm to 10pm, June 11 through August 27, you can head to downtown Reno to buy local.
Market shoppers will find a variety of seasonal, farm fresh fruits and vegetables from certified farms including Schletewitz Family Farms, NV Fresh Pak, Minton Farms, Cipponeri Family Farms, Wix Farms and others.
Shirley Sponsler, owner of Shirley's Farmers' Markets who has been organizing farmers' markets in northern Nevada for the last 23 years, says, "Our farmers bring produce from certified farms. This means they are required to obtain proof, (in the form of a certificate from a governmental agriculture department), that they actually grow what they bring."
While Shirley's Farmers' Markets is coordinating the vendors, the Sands Regency is bringing in quality live music each week for this free, family-friendly event. The bands hail from as far away as Missoula, Montana and as close as northern Nevada, with styles ranging from progressive bluegrass to funk-soul-hip-hop to old timey music with a modern twist.
Country and cowboy musician Brenn Hill rounds out June's entertainment roster on June 25. He's the perfect fit to perform while the Reno Rodeo is going on. Of Brenn Hill, Allmusic.com says, "…through writing and singing the songs that keep alive the traditions and heart of the American cowboy, he's made a unique commitment to maintain the legend of the West."
The Farmers' Market opens weekly on Thursday at 4 p.m., bands perform from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Attendance is free. It is located south of Third St. on Arlington Ave. The full entertainment schedule is available online. In addition to fresh produce and live entertainment, shoppers can find craft vendors, food vendors and a beer garden.
