More than 3,000 wrestlers converge on Reno
The World of Wrestling Reno World Championships youth wrestling tournament begins its three-day run Friday on 22 mats at the Reno Livestock Events Center.
This year, the tournament has 3,410 boys entered,along with 434 girls, the largest number of participants in its 20-year history.
The youth wrestlers, ages 6-18, represent 36 states. California has 1,181 entrants while Oregon is next with 593 participants and Washington has 442. There are 120 entrants from Nevada.
The Reno World Championships is the final leg of the Trinity Award. To earn the Trinity Award, a wrestler is required to win the Kickoff Classic in Tulsa, Okla., the Tulsa Nationals and the Reno World Championships.
Former Olympic wrestling champion Rulon Gardner will attend the tourney to help with the awards presentation.
