Iconic Awful Awful burger returns to High Sierra Brewing
Attention, burger fiends: You have another place to tuck into the Awful Awful burger.
The Northern Nevada institution — a gloriously messy jaw-stretching behemoth layering beef, cheese, fixings, secret sauce and bun atop a heap of fries — is returning to High Sierra Brewing Company inside Baldini’s Casino in Sparks.
The burger was on the menu when High Sierra opened in late 2014, but it was pulled a few months later when the cook trained to prepare the burger left the brewery. Since then, new staff have been trained, so it’s Awful Awful redux.
“We’re excited about re-introducing the legendary Awful Awful in the High Sierra brewery,” said Rick Heaney, a partner in Baldini’s. Heaney also owns the Little Nugget in downtown Reno, where the Awful Awful has been served for more than 60 years.
Along with the Awful Awful (so called because it’s awful big and awful good), High Sierra Brewing is introducing a new menu to complement its four flagship beers and its seasonal and specialty brews.
Coverage and appetites
The burger that has become part of Northern Nevada’s culinary lore began its history with two Idaho businessmen who brought a sandwich called the Awful Awful with them when they opened the Little Nugget in 1954.
One of the men also opened Nugget casinos in Sparks and Carson City, and soon, all three Nugget properties offered the burger. Today, it’s still served by the Reno and Carson casinos (and now, once more, at Baldini's).

When Heaney purchased the Little Nugget in 1989, he gave the burger its present form, increasing the beef to a half-pound; adding a custom-baked onion bun, lots of toppings and Russian-inspired dressing; and nestling the burger in a jumble of seasoned fries.
Over the years, the Awful Awful has been the subject of admiring coverage by media ranging from the Travel Channel to the New York Times to the Huffington Post — and the object of admiring appetites by scores of locals and visitors.
The Awful Awful with fries will go for $10.50 at High Sierra Brewing in Baldini’s. For more information, contact the brewery at www.highsierrabrewco.com or 775-398-4200, or the casino at www.baldinissports.com or 775-358-0116.
