Great Basin Brewing releases highly-anticipated beer
Craft beer aficionados have been waiting for Great Basin Brewing Company’s newest beer release — 808 Scytale. In fact, they’ve been waiting since Dec. 20, 2013 when Great Basin’s brewers first filled wooden barrels that used to store bourbon. The wait is over, but only for a limited amount of customers.
A bit of beer history
Scytale, which draws its name from an ancient cryptography device, is an Imperial Stout with roasted chocolate, dark caramel and molasses characteristics aged in whiskey or bourbon barrels for over a year where it develops additional notes of vanilla, spice, coconut, dark stone fruits and oak. Each of the three releases of Scytale corresponds to the number of days the beer rested in barrels: 404 days, 385 days and now 808 days.
The majority of this batch was bottled as 404 Scytale, but Tom Young, Owner and Brewmaster of Great Basin Brewing Company, held back two barrels for extended aging. “The extra time spent in the wood gave 808 some interesting traits. It rounded out any harsh edges and really lets smooth vanilla and bourbon-spiked chocolate linger on the tongue.” said Young. Those two barrels have produced just 300 bottles of 808 Scytale.
For the chance to purchase this coveted beer, Great Basin is opening the doors of Taps & Tanks (their production brewery) at 1155 S. Rock Blvd from 5 to 9 p.m. Sept. 22. There will be a limit of two bottles per customer, on a first-come first-served basis. Bottles will be available for $28 each plus tax.
Pints for Prostates
In addition to being able to purchase bottles to go and try 808 Scytale for the only time on tap, there will be brewery tours, games, food, music provided by members of Jelly Bread and a raffle with proceeds supporting Pints for Prostates. Pints for Prostates is a non-profit campaign that uses the universal language of beer to reach men about the importance of regular health screenings and early detection.
