Know Your City: Reno Buddhist Center
Interested in learning about the Reno Buddhist Center?
Join the next RGJ Know Your City event with a behind-the-scenes tour featuring resident priests at 10 a.m. Sept. 17. Free tickets are required and available at tickets.rgj.com.
The tour will include the temple hall, different meditation rooms, the dining area where Moon Rabbit Café meals are served to the community on a pay-what-you-can basis, and other parts of the sprawling facility. There will also be a Q&A session with the Revs. Matthew Fisher and Shelly Fisher.
The temple at 820 Plumas St. was originally built at Stead Air Force Base and moved to its current location in the 1950s. It has been a Buddhist center since 1989. Members study Dharma teachings, meditation and traditional chanting — brief demonstrations with participation will be offered during the tour. It also hosts many classes and support groups.
Past RGJ Know Your City events have included tours of the Northern Nevada Muslim Community’s mosque, the Reno Aces ballpark and the Mills B. Lane Justice Center in downtown Reno.
