Fulfillment centers are handling even more business as more people turn to online retail for their shopping needs. Here's a look at one such operation, Radial, which counts Neiman Marcus, Guess, GameStop and Bath & Body Works among its clients. Jason Hidalgo
It’s almost that time of year again for retailers.
One e-commerce company is already gearing up for retail’s busiest season with plans to hire more than a thousand workers at its Northern Nevada fulfillment centers.
Radial says it is taking applications at its online site as it seeks to fill 1,150 seasonal positions for handling merchandise and packages for the upcoming holiday shopping season.
Seasonal workers will be employed at Radial's fulfillment centers on Longley Lane in Reno and USA Parkway east of Sparks. Associates will be responsible for picking, packing and shipping client orders.
“Whether you’re looking to earn extra cash for the holidays or wanting to get your foot in the door at Radial, seasonal work is a great place to start,” said Kelly Scally, Radial strategic staffing director.
Last year, for example, about a thousand seasonal employees became full-time workers for the company, according to Radial.
Radial is an omnichannel commerce company that specializes in technology that aims to provide a seamless customer shopping experience between various points such as brick-and-mortar locations and online. The company works with several retailers and brands, including Adidas, Bath & Body Works, Guess, GameStop, Spanks and Neiman Marcus.
Seasonal positions will be paid on an hourly rate and workers will be eligible for overtime and holiday pay, flexible work schedules, employee discounts and a referral bonus program.
Seasonal workers are becoming even more important as more consumers shop online, according to Radial. In 2015, for example, the company’s fulfillment centers shipped 288 million units of merchandise. Of those, 48 million or nearly 17 percent were shipped during the peak retail season.
The company’s clients also saw more than $1.7 billion in fulfillment sales in 2015 across 42 brands and 18,000 stores. Radial’s total global footprint for its fulfillment centers is at more than 13 million square feet.
Online retail is also posing a challenge for traditional retailers such as Kmart, Macy’s and JCPenney’s, which have been facing pressure from businesses such as Amazon. Just recently, Kmart announced it was closing 72 additional Kmart and Sears stores on top of more than 180 closings that it previously announced. Last year, Macy’s also announced that it was closing 100 stores.
