Tesla's losses widened in the first quarter, but the automaker says it is on track to start producing highly anticipated next electric sedan later this year.

Tesla said it is on track to produce 5,000 of its Model 3 sedans later this year. The Model 3 will be Tesla's third vehicle and the first considered to be priced dramatically less than its current luxury sedan and SUV. The company has taken more than 400,000 reservations for it.

Tesla said it lost $397.2 million in the first quarter, compared to $282.3 million in the same quarter last year. Auto sales revenue was $2.3 billion, up 123% from $1 billion a year ago and solar generation and storage was 213.9 million, up 841% from $22.7 million a year ago.
