City celebrates opening of LGBTQ Community Center
The nonprofit organization Build Our Center will open the doors to northern Nevada’s only LGBTQ community center after seven years of fundraising to open a physical location. A public ribbon-cutting ceremony featuring Mayor Hillary Schieve and the Nevada Gay Men’s Chorus takes place at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, April 29, while a free, full-day of festivities to celebrate the grand opening event with tours, food trucks, refreshments and live entertainment takes place from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 30.
The purpose of Build Our Center is for charitable and educational purposes, including, but not limited to, the support, education and advocacy of the LGBTQ community in northern Nevada, including its members, allies and those confronted with sexual orientation and gender identity issues. In addition, the center promotes awareness and acceptance, provides a safe environment for members of the community and advocates for equality of all individuals.
