9 things to do with your mom for Mother's Day in Northern Nevada

Spring has sprung and Mother's Day is almost here. Are you wondering what you can do during Mother's Day weekend to celebrate mom? Maybe you're in need of something special to make her day memorable.

Mother's Day Rides on the V&T Railway
Moms can take a relaxing train ride on the V&T Railway and enjoy a mimosa before ever leaving the station. The round-trip train ride travels from Carson City to Virginia City and back again, and departs at 10 a.m. May 12 and at 10 a.m. May 13. The trains return to Carson City at 3 p.m. each day. Coffee and a pastry bar at the station, long-stem roses and live entertainment are part of this special Mother's Day ride. Tickets cost $38 for seniors, $25 for ages 3 to 16 and $45 for adults.
Mother's Day Photos at Cabela's
Have a free 4-by-6 photo taken with mom at Cabela's, 8650 Boomtown Road, Verdi. Simply stop by the store noon to 5 p.m. May 12 or noon to 4 p.m. May 13 for a free pic. The first 100 picture takers on Sunday also receive a free gift. Afterward, head over to the store's café and treat mom to a bite to eat.
Reno Mama Summit
Another option for moms to consider for Mother's Day weekend is participation in the Reno Mama Summit at Miguel Ribera Park, 3925 Neil Road. Expect to hear from Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve and other elected officials as they talk about the local action that can be taken on issues such as clean air and children's health. The event is scheduled from noon to 2 p.m. May 12 and all moms need to do is show up to take part in this Moms & Mayors program.
18th annual Moms on the Run
Mothers who enjoy running for a cause can still register for the 18th annual Pinocchio's Moms on the Run event, taking place at Foster Field, Reno High School, 395 Booth St., on May 13. Registration choices include a 5K run, 10K run and 5K casual walk. The annual race raises money for families facing hardships, particularly those tackling breast cancer or another type of cancer. The good thing about this run is that a continental breakfast is available before 9 a.m. start time. See the website for up-to-date information on pricing.
Mommy & Me at Picasso & Wine
Spend time with mom on Mother's Day weekend at a Picasso & Wine event made for two. This special Mother's Day event is scheduled 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. May 12 at the store, 13925 S. Virginia St. (the Summit Mall). The cost of $60 for two painters covers all art supplies and complimentary pastries. Mocktails for the kids and adult beverages also will be available.
Make a Bouquet for Mom
Are the little ones looking for something special to do for mom? They can go to Michael's to craft a paper flower bouquet just for her. (And moms can shop in the store to their heart's content as youngsters work away.) The craft projects are scheduled to start at 10 a.m. May 12 at two area Michael's stores: 4871 Kietzke Lane and 165 Los Altos Parkway, Sparks. Sign up for the $5 class in the store or online in advance.
Mother's Day Music Brunch
The Nevada Museum of Art, 160 W. Liberty St., offers Mother's Day brunch from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 13 that includes smoked seafood, omelette and carving stations, traditional breakfast fare, housemade pastries and more. Coffee, tea and juice are included in the price, but mimosas and Bloody Marys cost extra. The cost is $39 for adults and $20 for children 12 and younger. Reservations are recommended.
Color Mom Pink Event at Meadowood Mall
Head to Center Court at Meadowood Mall, 5000 Meadowood Mall Circle, to celebrate everything mom! Kids can make crafts, but refreshments and raffle prizes also are part of the fun. The event starts at 11 a.m. May 12 in the center of the mall. The only caveat is that to win a raffle item you must be present (so stick around, moms!).
Color Me Mine – Muffins with Mom
Color Me Mine, 13967 S. Virginia St. (at the Summit Mall) features a Muffins with Mom event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 12. Reserve a 1.5-hour spot at the studio and receive complementary muffins while you paint away with that loving family member. A 2-for-1 studio rate is available when reserving a spot.
