Sip, shop and stroll your way through historic downtown Truckee during the 13th annual Downtown Truckee Wine, Walk & Shop on Oct. 1. The event, running from noon to 4 p.m., features wines paired with local food at Truckee boutiques.

The Downtown Truckee Wine, Walk & Shop has donated more than $25,000 to local nonprofit organizations to date. This year, it benefits the Tahoe Food Hub and Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Lake Tahoe and Nevada County,

At $40 per ticket in advance or $45 at the door, attendees will receive a commemorative wine glass, an event program and map of participating venues, and five tickets for food tastings (additional food tickets may be purchased for $2 per ticket). A selection of wines from more than 30 wineries are available to sample at participating venues in downtown Truckee.

For those experiencing the event for the first time, here are some tips to make the most of your day:

Plan your route

Four hours may seem like plenty of time to peruse downtown, but take a minute after check-in to look at the map and make note of any wine, food or stores you want to see.

Don’t skip lunch

Admission to the event includes five food tickets that can be exchanged for food samples at various locations. The food can range from a savory gourmet bite to a more substantial item. Make sure to stop by your favorites early in the event; food has been known to run out.

Savor and sip

Some wineries bring one or two varietals, some may bring five or more so there can be more than 90 different wines to try with no limit on tastings. Ask the wine representative for a cork so you can remember your favorite wineries.

Plan your ride

Don’t drink and drive. The event contracts with High Sierra Taxi, which gives attendees free rides within town limits during the event. For Reno residents, there’s the Bliss Babe Bus: For $65, attendees can start the day with mimosas, Bloody Marys and pastries at Roundabout Grill at the Whitney Peak Hotel in downtown Reno and then ride up to Truckee. The package also includes VIP check-in, gifts from Bliss Babe and a ride back to Reno.
