Eldorado brewmaster creates award-winning beet beer
Beet Down, a beer created by brewmaster Greg Hinge of the Brew Brothers in the Eldorado Resort Casino, won a bronze medal in the North American Brewers Competition in the field and vegetable beer category.
Hinge said Beet Down is a sour ale made with roasted red beets aged in wine barrels.
"My wife and I really like red beets so I talked her into roasting 25 pounds of them," Hinge said. "Assistant brewer Aaron Helecky and I chopped them up and dumped them into a wine barrel. We then added one of our special Belgian beers to the barrel with the beets, and a year later we had Beet Down."
The Brew Brothers' eight permanent brews are the Big Dog Indiana Pale Ale, Carano Extra, Gold Medal Winner Redhead Amber Ale, Double Down Stout, Wild Card Wheat and Gold Dollar Pale Ale.
