Doesn’t matter if you’re not a gearhead. When Hot August Nights – a 31-year-old local event featuring classic cars and music – rolls through town, people stop to watch. It’s hard to miss – more than 6,000 vintage cars and (new this year) vintage trailers from the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s will be cruising through events in Sparks, Reno and Virginia City Aug. 4-13.

There’s show-n-shines, nightly cruises, free concerts, drag races and much more, attracting fans from 38 states and other countries.

“Hot August Nights has been mesmerizing individuals with the beauty of vintage automobiles and rock ‘n’ roll since 1986,” said Mike Whan, Hot August Nights executive director. “With its show-n-shines and evening cruises, the organization works hard to keep iconic traditions vibrant while still focusing on its even brighter future. We strive to bring new and exhilarating events and entertainment to the hundreds of thousands of attendees that allow for Northern Nevada to be lit by headlights for a week.”

This year, Hot August Nights is welcoming vintage trailers to dry camp – basically camping in an RV without water, sewer or electricity – for the entirety of the event and join the Grand Finale Parade on Sunday.

The inaugural Vintage Trailer Revival will show off campers and trailers made in or before 1976 in all their funky forms. Fans can check out the classic RVs at Rancho San Rafael Regional Park, where the trailer owners will camp Aug. 8-13. Public viewing hours are from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Trailer owners are also invited to show off their trailers during the Sparks open cruise on Aug. 8 and during the Grand Finale Parade on Aug. 13.

Trailers can participate in their own show-n-shine, to be judged by Justin and Anna Scribner, hosts of FLIPPIN’ RVs on the Travel Channel. Ribbons will be presented to the top three vintage trailers on Aug. 11.

Musical entertainment throughout the week is free. On Aug. 11, sing along with Rick Springfield and his love for “Jessie’s Girl.” And you won’t have to put another dime in the jukebox, baby, to check out Joan Jett and the Blackhearts on Aug. 12.

Not into the music? How about a three-day auction and auto expo? You can participate in the auction or just chill in the stands.

Back by popular demand from last year, the AutoCross & Drifting event lets novice to expert auto-cross fans take a shot at the course as they pass through a series of cones to try and best their last time.

Dragsters will race down a 1/16-mile track at the Nugget Casino Resort for the Drag Races & Burnouts.

At “Big Boy’s Toy Store,” enthusiasts can find the latest parts, accessories and technology for their street rods, hot rods and muscle cars. The Swap Meet and Cool Car Corral will feature more than 700 vendors and almost 500 classic cars for sale.
