The Rock Reno Tahoe Half Marathon is scheduled to take off Saturday, June 18.
The event, which is being organized by Epic Tahoe Adventures, has sold out for a second year in a row, with 2,000 runners and about 5,000 attendees expected for the event. The race will begin at Spooner Summit, and finish at the Hard Rock Lake Tahoe at Stateline.
The 'before party'
Pre-race festivities will be held Friday, June 17, at the Revolution Ballroom located at the Hard Rock. It will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. There will be booths and merchandise available from local and national sponsors. This event will be open to the general public.
The race itself will be held the following Saturday morning. There will be two different start times, 7 a.m. for walkers and joggers, 8 a.m for runners. There will be eight aid stations placed along the course. The stations will be manned by local businesses, teams, and nonprofits.
Jessica Schnoll, ETA's Queen of Everything Awesome, praises the volunteers who will be manning the aid stations. "We could not put an event of this magnitude without the amazing community support," she said. "The energy and enthusiasm the volunteers bring to the event is palpable. The runners feel it and are fueled by it."
Lane closures, detours
There will be lane closures and detours for motorists in the area. The lakeside lane of westbound Highway 50 will be closed from Spooner Summit to the bike trail at Round Hill Pines.
Vehicle traffic will be stopped intermittently, allowing one-way traffic through the tunnel. Lane closures will be in effect from 6 to 11 a.m. with significant delays at Cave Rock from 8 to 9:30 a.m.
Kingbury Grade is being recommended as a preferred detour route for traffic between Carson City and South Lake Tahoe during the event.
Access to peripheral streets and driveways will be prolonged at times. Event organizers are urging participants and visitors to be cautious and vigilant when crossing closed lanes to enter or exit the highway.
Awards and more
Race awards will start at 10:15 a.m. in the back parking lot of the Hard Rock.
Awards will be handed out to the best overall time for men and women and first through third in each age group.
After the awards, the Rock Tahoe Beach Party, sponsored by Sierra Nevada, will be held at the Tahoe Beach Retreat & Lodge. It will feature live music provided by Ike & Martin, beach games, Tiki Bar, beach BBQ, Sierra Nevada beers on tap, and Tahoe Blue Vodka drink specials. This event is a private party for racers and their guests, tickets are required for entry.
Planning is already under way for next year's event, with early-bird registration for the 2017 Rock Tahoe Half Marathon going on sale June 17.
