This weekend is full of things to do -- in fact, I have three events to attend on Saturday, which never happens. First up? Melissa Etheridge in concert on Friday night at the Grand Sierra Resort's Grand Theatre. Next, a little guilty pleasure viewing of the latest in the saga of heroine Katniss Everdeen in "Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part II." And finally? Heading over to the Reno Ballroom Saturday night to see the local premiere of Warren Miller's "Chasing Shadows."

Melissa Etheridge

Etheridge is coming to Reno's window -- ha ha, get it? -- on Friday with a show at the Grand Sierra Resort. I've loved Etheridge's music since my high school days of the late 1990s. She has just released a new studio album, "This Is M.E.," so it seems the perfect time to catch her show. Besides, as much as it pains me to say it, I haven't gotten to check out the GSR's remodeled theatre yet, and I've been dying to. She performs at 9 p.m. Friday.

"The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part II"

My best friend made me read the "Hunger Games" novels by Suzanne Collins. I initially resisted, as I like to save my reading time for more classic fare, but I finally broke down and read them. They were fun and pleasurable and a quick read. So, even though I know how the series ends, I can't wait to see what the film has in store for our hero, Katniss Everdeen. "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part II" opens Friday at local theaters.

Warren Miller's "Chasing Shadows" film showing

On Saturday night, I'll be checking out Warren Miller's 66th production, which follows the world’s biggest names in skiing and snowboarding on a cinematic journey. Watch JT Holmes, Seth Wescott, Caroline Gleich, Steven Nyman, Marcus Caston and more as they pursue turns on the mountains of our dreams: Chamonix, Alaska’s Chugach, the Chilean Andes, Utah’s Wasatch and the mightiest range of them all: the Himalaya.

The event runs from 5:30 to 11 p.m. Saturday with the film showing at 8 p.m. Also included is an expo area with vendors and sponsors including Michael Hohl Honda Subaru, Bobo's Ski + Board, Squaw Valley, Usa, T-Mobile, Moment Skis, RGJ Outdoors and more. For tickets, click here.
