Local firefighters will be competing at 4:30 p.m. Oct. 16 in their own chili cookoff as part of the greater World’s Championship Chili Cookoff at the GSR.
Hot chili. Hot firefighters. Combine those two things and you’ve got one smokin’ cookoff.
Firefighters representing Reno, Sparks, Truckee Meadows, the Air National Guard and the Airport Authority will all be competing at 4:30 p.m. Oct. 16 in their own chili cookoff as part of the greater World’s Championship Chili Cookoff at the Grand Sierra Resort this weekend.
Each of the participating firefighters will have their chili judged by chefs from the GSR. The first-place winner will choose a charity to receive a $1,000 donation; the four runner-ups will be awarded cooking lessons from a top chef at Grand Sierra Resort.
For those interested in tasting the firefighters’ famous chili, come back to the cookoff Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. There will be an antique fire engine and event attendees can taste the chili by bringing two cans of non-perishable food for the Food Bank of Northern Nevada. Attendees can trade those two cans for a tasting kit, good for five tastings. Those who want to taste chili from other participants can also bring two cans of food to obtain a tasting kit.
The World’s Championship Chili Cookoff runs Oct. 16-18 at the Grand Sierra Resort. The cookoff will feature cooks from around the country competing with their best chili to win coveted prizes and be voted people’s choice. The GSR event is the world’s championship in a series of cookoffs around the country.
The event will be host to several competitions, including Best Booth Decoration and Showmanship, Best Homestyle Chili, Best Chili Verde, Best Salsa, Best Traditional Red Chili and the People’s Choice Chili. Any attendee who brings two cans of food to be donated to Food Bank of Northern Nevada will receive a tasting kit good for one sample from each of the participating firefighters and one vote for people’s choice.
The Chili Cookoff will be host to a rocking entertainment lineup throughout the three-day event. The lineup includes 60s Summer of Love, Rustler’s Heat, Thunder Cover, Chris Gardner, and Jackson Michelson.
Other special events include the Shoot N’ Holler Contest (winner is determined by spectator applause), Miss Chili Pepper competition (winner is determined by spectator applause), and Mr. Hot Sauce competition (winner is determined by spectator applause).
