Celebrating its second year as the Biggest Little City's only comics-and-art-centric convention, the Sands Reno Comic-Con kicks into gear with a new Friday Night Events schedule on Sept. 18 in addition to a full day of activities on Saturday, Sept. 19. Fans, cosplayers and a large number of vendors will converge at the Sands from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to trade collectibles, meet artists and take part in panels both Friday and Saturday.
Pylons and planes
Held every September just north of Reno, the National Championship Air Races have become an institution for Northern Nevada and aviation enthusiasts from around the world. This year's event starts Wednesday, Sept. 16 and continues through Sunday, Sept. 20. The event features six racing classes, a large display of static aircraft and several military and civil flight demonstrations. Here's our picks to check out

Put on your dancing shoes and head over to The Brew Brothers at the Eldorado Resort Casino . Left of Centre, formerly The Mudpuppies, will perform at 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16 to Sunday, Sep. 20. Getting their start in the early '90s, the band is best known for covering many styles.
Livin' La Vida Loca with Ricky Martin at the Grand Sierra Resort
Join Ricky Martin for his 2015 World Tour at the Grand Theatre at the Grand Sierra Resort . He'll take the stage Wednesday, Sept. 16 for one night only to promote his new album, "Personalidad." After performing with Menudo, the young Martin rocketed to fame with his well-known hit "Livin' La Vida Loca". Show time is 9 p.m. and tickets are $60-$125.
Coburn Station to rock at Hard Rock Lake Tahoe
If you love psychedelic rock, mark Friday, Sept. 18 on your calendar. Truckee, California band, Coburn Station, will be at Vinyl at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Lake Tahoe, putting on a show. According to their bio, the band is "dedicated to the town of Truckee and the great men that made it." Made up of Truckee locals, the group never fails to put on a rocking show. Doors open at 9 p.m. and show time is 9:30 p.m. There is no cover.
Behind the scenes at Nevada Museum of Art
Join art historian Alfred Harrison on Thursday, Sept. 17 at the Nevada Museum of Art to learn more about some of the paintings in the current exhibit, Tahoe: A Visual History. He'll talk about the works of nineteenth century artists Albert Bierstadt, Thomas Hill, William Keith, John Ross Key, and William Marple. The talk begins at 6 p.m. and tickets are $5 for students, $8 for museum members, and $12 for the general public.
Relive the '50s at the Nugget Casino Resort
The Nugget Casino Resort hosts a '50s dance party in the Celebrity Showroom on Saturday, Sept. 19. This walk down a musical memory lane features hits from Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper himself. This high energy show will have audience members tapping their toes and clapping their hands as they sing along to their favorite songs from the era, including La Bamba, Chantilly Lace, Peggy Sue, and many more. Show time is 8 p.m. and tickets are $29.

Clayton English, Ian Bagg, Andy Erickson, Dominique, and Michael Palascak will take the stage for one night only in the Grande Exposition Hall, guaranteeing you'll laugh your socks off the entire time. Visiting artist at Nevada Discovery
The Terry Lee Wells Nevada Discovery Museum offers a bevy of activities for kids of all ages, but if you happen to be in town Saturday, Sept. 19, stop by for a demonstration from visiting artist Carol Foldvary-Anderson. She'll be demonstrating an oil pastel smudge technique. Kids will get to experiment with warm and cool colors, play with colors, and create their own version of the sun, the moon, and the stars. Demonstrations are at 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m., and 3 p.m. and are included with museum admission.
