The days are getting slightly shorter, but there is still plenty to do in Reno and the surrounding areas. You also don't have to spend a lot to have plenty of fun this fall.

56th Annual International Camel & Ostrich Races'
When: September 11-13
Cost: $15+

What started as a tall tale is still going strong nearly 60 years later. The camel and ostrich races promise to provide fun and excitement for the entire family. Not only are the races happening, but there are tons of other activities for kids and adults of all ages. On Sunday, September 13, the first 100 kids gets a free camel ride prior to the start of the races courtesy of Dolan Auto Group.

Lake Tahoe Autumn Food and Wine Festival
When: September 11-13
Cost: $25-$215

The Lake Tahoe Autumn Food and Wine Festival is celebrating 30 years this year and they're doing it up right at Northstar. With plenty of culinary delights from Lake Tahoe and the surrounding area, there's sure to be something to please every palate. It's more than just food, though — there's a wine festival, farmer's markets, dinners, classes, and plenty of shopping so you can stock your kitchen with any number of the delightful treats you're able to sample during the various events.

The Great Reno Balloon Race
When: September 11-13
Cost: Free

Billed as the world's largest free hot air balloon event, the Great Reno Balloon Race is a family friendly event with plenty to offer. If you're feeling particularly adventurous, head over to Rancho San Rafael Park around 4:30 a.m. for Dawn Patrol, when the balloons ascend into the pre-dawn sky, creating an awe-inspiring sight. There are balloons in a variety of shapes and colors — kids will love seeing their favorite characters soaring through the sky so early in the morning.

National Championship Air Races
When: September 16-20
Cost: $50+

Taking place at the Reno Stead Airport, the National Championship Air Races have the distinction of being both the only closed course pylon racing event and the world's longest running air race. The air races were also named one of 10 best air shows in the world by USA Today. Besides the races, there are planes to view, pilots to meet, and concessions to be had. There will also be several military displays and demonstrations. You won't want to miss an action-packed four days of fun and excitement.

Victorian Steampunk Ball
When: September 19-20
Cost: $25-$45

Join High Desert Steam in Virginia City for a weekend of steam punk, Victorian fun. Start the weekend off with a group dinner and a ghost tour of Virginia City, believed to be one of the most haunted cities in America. On September 20, there will be a parade and the ambiance rooms at the Silver Queen Hotel will be open, showcasing all of their secret and hidden treasures. That evening is the third annual Doctor Belladonna's Swashbuckling Soiree, followed by the fifth annual Victorian Steampunk Ball, featuring the musical stylings of bluegrass band Strange on the Range and steampunk band, Nathaniel Johnstone Band. This is a can't miss event for the Victorian inside you!

Reno Pirate Crawl
When: September 19, 8 p.m.
Cost: $5

Arr! You'll definitely be talking like a pirate after you're done with the Reno Pirate Crawl. Five dollars get you a commemorative cup, a map, and the opportunity to participate in the best night ever. Costumes are not required, but are strongly encouraged (and will make your night that much more fun!). Bars throughout downtown Reno are participating, so grab your friends and have a pre-Halloween celebration.

Eldorado Great Italian Festival
When: October 10-11
Cost: $3 for pasta

The Eldorado Great Italian Festival is happening once again. There will be a grape stomp, sauce cookers competition, wine walk, an Italian farmer's market, kids' gelato eating contest, Italian Buffet and incredible, free, live entertainment, and vendors. You won't want to miss the pasta tasting bowls — $3 each from the pasta tasting booth at the corner of 4th and Virginia each day of the festival. There will also be special Italian buffets inside the buffet at the Eldorado before, during, and after the festival, with an Italian Seafood Feast on Friday, October 9.

Reno Zombie Crawl
When: October 24, 8 p.m.
Cost: $5

Walk like a zombie to get your commemorative cup and map for the annual zombie crawl on October 24. It's the perfect way to kick off your Halloween fun. There will be several starting points in downtown, midtown, and on 4th Street for starting the crawl this year, so stay tuned for those. Start the night with Thriller Under the Arch — more than 1,000 participants will be learning the moves to Michael Jackson's famous song and performing for the crowd. You don't want to miss the opportunity to participate. Don't forget to dress up!
