Since its inception in 1983, Intuit has grown to a company with close to 8,000 employees across five continents, including 11 sites here in the United States. The overarching goal at Intuit is to create financial software that makes life a little simpler, with flagship products such as QuickBooks, TurboTax and Mint. At the Reno office of Intuit — named one of the five Best Places to Work in Northern Nevada — more than 400 employees focus on Intuit Payroll, which offers software support for payroll services.
About the company
“We’re the nation’s most popular do-it-yourself payroll service, with more than one million small business payroll customers,” said Jason Shipp, Intuit Accountant Professionals Manager. “We not only help businesses make money, we also help them pay employees.”
Shipp said the primary functions of the Reno site include helping small business owners set up the Intuit payroll program, assisting them through its first use and then remaining available for ongoing support.
“Our tax operations team is also housed in Reno, which allows us to pay and file for our clients using the Full Service Payroll,” said Barbara McKinnies, payroll tax operations leader and Reno site leader for Intuit. “In addition to all of that, we have compliance analysts, project managers and engineers at the Reno location focused on payroll innovations and enhancements.”
Bringing the talent to life
According to Intuit managers, the task of hiring talented employees for the Reno office is made much easier with the recognition that Intuit is one of Northern Nevada’s Best Places to Work — an award the company has received multiple times.
“In software technology, a company’s core strength lies in the depth and talent of its team. It’s no small challenge to recruit and hire in a field that’s short on talent, especially when faced with competition like Google, Facebook, Yahoo, Twitter and Apple,” said Shipp. “As a potential hire for the Intuit Reno office, you are choosing a location in which you will spend most of your life. Knowing that an organization prides itself on being recognized year after year as one of the best places to work in the Reno area lets you know that this company does value its people.”
The details of what makes Intuit a great place to work vary from special wellness perks, such as preventive care assessments and healthy cafeteria meals, to an array of employee social events that focus on having fun.
“Site engagement councils help bring these events to life, often partnering with teams across the company and local nonprofits,” said McKinnies. “Intuit Reno has a Halloween carnival, annual turkey bowling, Christmas in July to help Veteran’s Guest House and an Earth Day Celebration, just to mention a few.”
The company also demonstrates a pronounced commitment to community outreach. For example, Intuit is a top sponsor for numerous local organizations and events, such as the Northern Nevada Food Bank, the Reno Tahoe Odyssey, the Great Reno Balloon Races, Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful and more. In addition, Intuit employees are allotted 32 hours of paid time off to volunteer for nonprofit organizations.
