Helping patients access the best health care possible is the primary mission at Grand Rounds, a San Francisco-based medical technology company that expanded to Reno in 2015. Less than a year after the company’s Sierra Patient Center opened in south Reno, Grand Rounds was named one of the five Best Places to Work in Northern Nevada, based on positive surveys from the center’s employees.

Highly engaged, mission driven

“We believe that by putting employees at the center, we are providing a rewarding work environment that enables every employee to contribute to our mission,” said Emily Avila, Grand Rounds Team Development Manager. “This award demonstrates that our employees are highly engaged and mission driven, helping our patients through life’s toughest moments with empathy and skill.”

This help for patients comes in several forms, such as remotely connecting those with an existing diagnosis to top-tier doctors for expert second opinions on the diagnosis and care plan. Grand Rounds also works to identify the highest quality in-network physician in each patient’s area and coordinates the scheduling and follow up of in-person office visits.

These are two examples of the patient support services Grand Rounds provides in an effort to prevent and resolve health issues optimally, which can pay off in the form of saved money — and even saved lives. Typically, patients have access to Grand Rounds as an added employee benefit on top of standard health insurance.

“Grand Rounds provides an employer-based solution that gives employees and their families the technology, information and support they need to make life’s most critical choices — whether and where to receive medical treatment,” said Avila. “The employees at Sierra Patient Center in Reno work tirelessly to deliver an experience unlike anything else in health care.”

Invested in the team

The center currently has a staff of about 100 people, many of whom compose the Grand Rounds Care Team, or customer service group. These are the folks who serve as the point of contact for patients throughout the length of their individual health care journeys — a task that helps make this site one of Northern Nevada’s Best Places to Work.

“First and foremost, our team has the honor and privilege of having an impact on people’s lives and changing health care for the better,” said Avila. “Each of us also gets the opportunity to shape our future and grow with the company.”

Among the perks of working at Grand Rounds in Reno, Avila cites competitive benefits and compensation, generous vacation time, ample leave for new parents, strong insurance options and access to Grand Rounds’ services for themselves and their families.

Other factors designed to promote a rewarding, healthy work environment include company sponsored healthy snacks and drinks, group exercise challenges and a variety of volunteer opportunities.

“At Grand Rounds, we invest in building a great culture, because we believe this ultimately leads to exceptional customer service,” said Avila. “We are on a mission to help everyone, everywhere, access the best and brightest in American medicine.”
