Downtown Reno residents should soon see a new convenience store that provides quick meals, fresh produce and staples for everyday living. The Urban Market is set to open in spring on the ground floor of the new 3rd Street Flats apartments.
Owners Denise and Dale Barcomb, who have run 7-Eleven franchises for 16 years with one in Carson City for six years, will be creating a more "upscale experience" in the new store. That means local coffee barista, some organic foods, fresh and frozen meats, cold drinks, a more contemporary interior design and easy-to-make meals.
Downtown Reno residents have wanted a large grocery store chain for years, but an RGJ report in 2015 showed that it doesn't have the demographic or population density large chains look for. Instead, several convenience stores and the Great Basin Community Co-op serve the need for produce and non-perishables.
While the other convenience stores focus mostly on non-perishables and some fresh foods and the co-op focuses on sustainable organic food, the Urban Market would fall somewhere between.
“We can’t be a Raley's, but we can provide alternatives to people jumping in their car and having to drive to Raley’s or Save Mart,” Dale Barcomb said. “People are excited about the opportunity to stroll across the street."
The 2,700-square-foot store would primarily serve residents of 3rd Street Flats, which opened Jan. 24, and other residents in the surrounding area.
“If you just want to get a bag of Frito-Lay barbecue chips, we’ll have it," he said. "And hopefully if you want a specialty organic kettle chip and you’ve told us that’s what you like, we’ll be happy to have it, too."
Denise Barcomb said she also wants to make the store feel like a place people can hang out, enjoy free wi-fi and form a small community meeting place. She said their 7-Eleven in Carson City is the cleanest and friendliest store of its kind. Her employees know their customers, memorize their orders and provide service not matched at other convenience stores.
The Urban Market will open along side a new Korean barbecue restaurant, which are both still under construction. The third retail space has not been leased, yet.
