The leaders of Squaw Valley Ski Holdings made their pitch to the Placer County Planning Commission for approval of a major redevelopment plan.

Led by CEO Andy Wirth, company officials highlighted what they say would be substantial community improvements to offset environmental impacts of a plan that could add more than 1,400 bedrooms at Squaw Valley.

They said their plan includes $2.7 million annually in park and trail fees, $500,000 for regional housing plus employee housing for up to 300 workers and a non-profit foundation that would raise $65 million in 25 years for community improvements.

The controversy

The money from Squaw is aimed at assuaging concerns that their proposed specific plan would cause traffic and other environmental problems for Squaw Valley and into the Lake Tahoe Basin.

Wirth told the planning commission the project is needed to keep Squaw Valley Resort competitive.

"We would very much like the opportunity to be competitive in a hyper-competitive marketplace," Wirth said.

County staff recommended approval of the plan, including Squaw-funded mitigation.

The planning commission could vote later today, after opponents have a chance to speak.

The Placer County Board of Supervisors would be the next step for the project after the planning commission.
