Summer in the Biggest Little City is chock full of events for the whole family to revel in. Looking for a fun place to take the family for an affordable dinner? No problem, Reno/Sparks is home to two great family-friendly food truck events. While Friday nights are the quintessential evening to get out and celebrate the end of a week, the middle of each seven-day spread is a wonderful time to enjoy a bit of fun to break up a week.
Try Feed the Camel, a relaxed Wednesday night food truck event, taking place at the historic McKinley Arts and Culture Center, with a wide variety of food trucks offering a myriad of diverse fare that will ensure everyone in the family will find something they love. Grassy areas surrounding the building are ideal to dine on while taking in the soothing sounds of the Truckee River flowing nearby, and abundant shade allows people to escape the summertime heat.
Parking for Feed the Camel is free, with a large parking lot adjacent to the former schoolhouse—in close proximity for strollers and handheld toddlers to easily make their way to the event. This is an evening that even the family dog (on leash) can enjoy.
On the last Wednesday of each month, dining at Feed the Camel means you "Give a Hump" as select local charities are provided with proceeds from the sales that evening to go toward their cause. In July, Give a Hump goes to support the local Build Our Center project; August will benefit Project 150, who helps homeless students in Washoe County stay in school and succeed; and in September, monies will go to the American Cancer Society's "Big Dig," which provides local children with cancer the exciting chance to operate bulldozers and more.
If you don't have time to take a break during the weeknight, then catch dinner and a movie in the St. Mary's Amphitheater during the Sparks Food Truck Drive-In at Victorian Square. This Saturday night event is the ultimate in family fun! Entire broods can be fed and entertained for a mere fraction of the price of going to a restaurant and movie theater. Iconic movies with broad appeal, such as The Never Ending Story, The Lego Movie, Back to the Future, Ghostbusters and more will be shown in the amphitheater alongside a number of food trucks providing film feast. Establishments of 39 North Marketplace will also provide an array of libations for the of age adults to choose from.
St. Mary's will provide cushions to borrow for that night, but guests are encouraged to bring their own stadium seats and blankets. Due to the support of the City of Sparks and the Sparks Food Truck Drive-In, St. Mary's was able to put a new roof on the beautiful amphitheater, where the event takes place.
