One woman show begins run in the Golden Cabaret
By Tim Parsons, Lake Tahoe Action
Instead of appearing like a dingbat, Bethany Owen smartly made the right moves and built a career.
The show band Full Moon, which performed on both the North and South Shore years ago, added a television program segment to its act which included Owen singing the part of shrill-voiced Edith Bunker from “All in the Family.”
“I think the band thought I was going to make myself look pretty pitiful but the truth was the audience loved the impression and it was the birth of me attempting to do more,” said Owen, whose “One Voice” show opens Mother's Day Weekend in the Horizon Resort Casino's Golden Cabaret.
Owen appears as numerous women artists such as Cher, Joan Rivers, Patsy Cline and Madonna. She mixes live singing with standup comedy.
“One Voice,” which has been performed full time for seven years, is coming off a nine-week run in Laughlin, Nev. Her show will appear Saturdays through Tuesdays until at least June 22. The “Carnival Cabaret” continues indefinitely. The two shows appear the same nights on Saturdays.
Owen, who once opened for Joe Piscopo in the Horizon's big showroom, now a movie complex, also had a long-running show in the Golden Cabaret, opening for burlesque performer Tempest Storm.
“I love that room,” Owen said. “When I worked the room with Tempest I had dreams of playing that room with my own act.”
“One Voice” typically opens with Owen appearing as Marilyn Monroe. She will improvise with the audience as Cher, Joan Rivers or even Sarah Palin. Once she comes onstage, she remains there the entire performance.
“People are fascinated by the quick changes,” said producer Jim Whirlow.
Owen revealed how she does it.
“It's add on, tear away,” she said. “Dolly (Parton's) very quick — snap-on boobs.”
Characters include Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, Judy Garland and Minnie Pearl, but there also are contemporary figures.
“I do have a younger group of characters I can switch out for my younger audience,” she said. “There aren't too many acts that can play before a senior group on one day, a college group the next day and a gay group the next day. I can switch out segments. For a younger set I can do Macy Gray and Britney Spears and Gwen Stefani.”
Owen and Whirlow work in synchronicity.
“Without Jim doing my cues it could be a train wreck,” Owen said. “We can read each other's minds if something goes awry, too. We've worked together so much that he knows every minute an incident that could happen. He's technically right on top of it.”
Whirlow said the show is conducive to a long-running stint.
“At Laughlin people came three, four times,” he said. “It's like a good play. If written and created correctly you'll come back to see it again.”
