Come out and enjoy perfect weather and 48STRAIGHT

Well, there's nothing to report. Nothing except we have soooo much snow from the last weekend's storms, it's insane! But add to that the great weather we're getting this week, and a few awesome local events and it's the perfect winter trifecta ... or as we like to call it, Lake Tahoe!

The first week of February was very good to us here in Lake Tahoe, with many resorts reporting 100 inches and more of new snow. We're in the clear for this week, so it's time to head out and get your share of powder.

And don't forget to MARK YOUR CALENDARS for this weekend! Friday, Feb. 8 through Feb. 11, Squaw's hosting the biggest winter event yet -- 48STRAIGHT, a celebration of mountain culture, including ski and snowboard-cross racing and halfpipe competitions, more than a dozen live concerts, street parties, fashion shows, film festivals and environmental expos. Oh yeah, and tahoe.com will be there too. With all this fresh powder settling in, there'll be even more reason to party. Be safe and have fun out there!

Avalanche safety:
avoid the chilling killer

by Wendy Lautner, tahoe.com

Avalanches, naturally occurring and human-triggered, can turn a beautiful day into a nightmare. In the United States, avalanches kill approximately 25 people annually. Often, those buried are winter recreationalists traveling in the backcountry.

This week we went to Geoff Clarke, a South Lake Tahoe native and avid backcountry skier and instructor, for tips on avalanche safety. Geoff's been teaching avalanche courses for seven years for ASI (Alpine Skills International), Lake Tahoe Community College and Kirkwood Mountain Resort. He's a certified AMGA ski guide with 25 years of experience in backcountry skiing, including three years spent in the Alps as a guide and teacher. Here's what he had to say:

1. Before you begin, assess the danger. The weather is constantly changing and prior conditions in the backcountry will likely have a substantial impact on the amount of inherent danger at any given time. To accurately assess the danger, Geoff recommends checking local avalanche reports before you travel in the backcountry.

This week's Powderhound winner is ...

Sharlea gets a big thank you for submitting a photo of Merckx, who loves to blaze a path through the snow. Sharlea wins this week's Powderhound T-shirt and is now entered into the grand prize drawing for a $100 Petco gift certificate! Congratulations!

Your furry best friend could win a Petco gift certificate! Send us a photo of your snow dog, and look for it the following week at our Powderhound Gallery. Each week, our staff will pick one lucky participant to win a Powderhound Report T-shirt. That winner will have their dog featured in that week's issue of the Powderhound Report, and will automatically be entered into the grand prize drawing for a $100 Petco certificate. Submit your photo here, (don't forget to include your name in the caption!) and we'll notify you if you're a winner! We can't wait to see your Powderhound! Good luck!
