horseback riding in Tahoe

Giddy up, partner, for a different kind of ride

By Wendy Lautner, aka The Mountain Mutt*

While Lake Tahoe seems best known for its many ski resorts, it could also be said that the high-mountain cirque is also a horseback riding Mecca. Six stables scattered around the area offer plenty of opportunities to explore the backcountry from the saddle, each one providing riders with a varied experience in scenery and terrain.

South Shore: Riders can choose from loop rides at Camp Richardson (530-541-3113), design an overnight camping ride with Cascade Stables (530-541-2055) or meander through the Toiyabe National Forest on horseback with Zephyr Cove Stables (775-588-5664).

For lake views on shorter rides, head to the Camp Richardson stables on Tahoe's southwest shore. Two-hour trips take riders past Fallen Leaf Lake, while the one-hour loop offers lake views for most of the way.

Groovy Gear: Don't let riding horses bug you

Repel DEET SprayOn a ride, be sure to remind the bugs that you don't like them. Although there are now several 2-in-1 products that offer sunscreen plus bug repellent, they aren't recommended by the Center for Disease Control. Sunscreen typically needs to be re-applied more often than bug goop, so take a few more seconds and use two products. Though there's always controversy over the anti-bug chemical DEET, the CDC approves it highly, along with the more natural oil of lemon-eucalyptus. A 23% formula of DEET will protect for up to five hours, kids should use no more than a 10% concentration.

Get a little zen on that horse
Mountain Mutt's Tip o' the Week!

The most important thing for a rider to remember is balance. If you are off balance on your horse, your horse will be off balance beneath you. New riders tend to grip the animal pretty hard with their calves and thighs, but this is the easiest way to get off balance as you fatigue and shift your weight. In order to maintain alignment and balance, you must use your upper and lower abdominals, or core muscles. If you have the chance, take a Pilates class or do some ab work before you ride. Your back and the horse will thank you.
