No matter what you ride, there's a bike and a club for you

No matter what you ride, there's a bike
and a club for you

By Dana Turvey, aka The Mountain Mutt*

Almost since the advent of the wheel, humans have been trying to find better ways to roll across the earth's surface; bicycling is no exception. From the original single speeds to 10-speeds, to the current norm of 30-speeds, cycling companies keep finding ways to improve your riding pleasure.

There used to be only road bikes, then styles grew to include mountain styles, but along the way, comfort remained a big buzz word. Trevor Brown, longtime bike mechanic at Tahoe Sports Ltd, said "Comfort is huge. There must be two jillion million ways now to improve comfort on all kinds of bikes. Gel seats, split seats, padded grips, taller rise stems -- everything is aimed at making riding more comfortable now that the average age of cyclists is older."

Groovy Gear: Cruisin' down the avenue

www.electrabike.comCruisers, those nostalgic bikes from our youth, are making a comeback. Brands like Electra and Felt have designs that just scream to be ridden along your city bike path. And styles aren't quite as streamlined as they used to be -- instead of just single-speeds and coaster brakes (which you can get), there are some with as many as 21 speeds and hand brakes. Wide comfortable seats, upright handlebars, and the ability to climb some hills -- what are you waiting for? And don't forget the basket and bell, of course.

What else goes in that bike pack?
Mountain Mutt's Tip o' the Week!

If you ride even a little, you know you should never leave home without some tools and a tube or patch kit. But what else should you cram in that little under-the-seat pack?

Sunblock: A small stick of 30 SPF will go along way to keeping your nose intact on longer rides. Don't forget to reapply after you wipe off the sweat you're working up.

Duct tape: Take a roll that has 25% left and stomp it flat so it fits. You never know when you might need MacGyver's miracle tape.

Food and matches: Even short rides can go awry, and it's better to be safe than sorry. This is particularly true for mountain bikers.
