Hungry Valley, Reno's motorcycle playground
One of the most popular riding areas in the Reno area is Hungry Valley located just a few minutes north of Reno. With a wide variety of beginner-to-advanced trails, Hungry Valley, or Moon Rocks to the locals, is a great place to log some miles in the saddle as you get your roost on.
Moon Rocks’ terrain ranges from wide-open flat area that is friendly to kids and beginners to rocky hill climbs that are so long that they will leave even the most expert rider hoping for the end. While intermediate riders can handle most of what Moon Rocks can throw at them, it’s worth noting that there is a lot of sand riding. One notable feature is the uphill whoop sections found near the lower staging area. It is a great place to perfect form and to just have fun going as fast as you can up the whoops sections.
To reach the Hungry Valley area, travel north on Pyramid Highway (accessible from Highway 80), and take a left on Winnemucca Ranch Road (23 miles north of Highway 80). Winnemucca Ranch Road is a paved road that eventually turns into dirt. Two miles down the dirt road you will see the Hungry Valley sign on the left. Turn left and follow the dirt road to the lower staging area with it’s "Moon Rocks," drive another mile to get to the upper staging area where there is room for overnight campers.
Hungry Valley is Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land and although it’s an open area, it is surrounded by limited-use areas. So be sure to pay attention to any signs detailing BLM restrictions or rules. In the limited use area stay on trails posted as open. Any trail in the limited use area not marked as open is off limits.
