Outhouse Races in Virginia City

The 2011 Championship Outhouse Parade & Races in Virginia City are set for Oct. 1-2 this year. On Saturday, the Outhouse parade is at noon and racing begins at 1 p.m., with races every half -hour until all racers are finished. On Sunday, the finals at are noon, with the awards presented at 3:30 p.m.

The official parade of outhouses starts at Noon on Sat., Oct. 1 along “C” Street downtown, followed by a double elimination tournament from 1 to 5 p.m. Second rounds of the competition and the final race for the championship take place on Sunday starting at noon.

There will be a chance to vote for the ugliest, the prettiest, the most unusual outhouses, etc. during the People's Choice Awards on Saturday. All races take place on “C” street (the main drag) in downtown Virginia City.

Typical outhouse themes vary in styles, décor, and originality, leaving the entries completely up to the imagination of the team and the company, group or family that it represents. This makes for interesting renditions of artistic license. Some of the entrants from past years include “The Flapper Crappers,” “The Haunted Outhous,e” “Alice In Pottyland,” “The Potty Poopers,” “The Urinator” and “The Golden Throne” whose team comes all the way from San Jose, Calif.

OVERNIGHT
Most outhouses are left in the pit area over night and we rope it off. We would like to request that all outhouses are to be left in the pit area but as you know, unless someone spends the night there, they are not watched – the sheriff patrols more often, and if you wish to stay with your outhouse, you may. BUT, one person only please! And NO kids! IF you feel you cannot leave your outhouse, you MUST consult with the judges before removing your outhouse or it will be disqualified.

Saturday at noon the parade will begin at the Bucket of Blood parking lot on “C” street and proceed up the hill past the Washoe Club where the outhouses must turn around and come back to the pit area. All other entries may continue on to the 4th Ward school.
