The 2009-2010 'Broadway Comes to Reno' season
'Wizard of Oz', 'The Wedding Singer', Avenue Q', and 'Stomp' on the bill
The Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts is proud to announce the 15th Anniversary 2009-10 Broadway Comes to Reno Season, highlighted by the fresh new musical about surviving in NYC with big dreams and a tiny bank account, Avenue Q, and the iconic family favorite The Wizard of Oz.
The season includes:
Cry Baby –Oct. 9-11
It’s 1954 and the blue bloods of Baltimore are facing an atomic-sized threat in hip-swiveling jeans. From the delightfully demented mind of John Waters and the writers of Hairspray comes the story of a guitar-playing rebel and the good girl who dares to cross to his side of the tracks. What starts as an innocent romance balloons like a mushroom cloud in this off-kilter musical comedy.
The Wedding Singer –Jan. 15-17, 2010
Robbie Heart is New Jersey’s favorite wedding singer, until he is left at the altar. When he meets a young waitress, its love at first sight. But Julia is engaged to a Wall Street shark, and Robbie must pull off the performance of a decade to win his dream girl. With a score that pays homage to pop songs of the ‘80s, The Wedding Singer takes us back to when hair was big, collars were up and a wedding singer was the coolest guy in the room.
Avenue Q –Feb. 26-28, 2010
Avenue Q is Broadway's 2004 Tony Award® winner for Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book. A hilarious show full of heart and hummable tunes, Avenue Q is about surviving in NYC with big dreams and a tiny bank account. Called "one of the funniest shows you're ever likely to see" by Entertainment Weekly, Avenue Q features a cast of people and puppets who tell the story in a smart, risqué and entertaining way. Contains adult subject matter. Parental discretion advised.
The Drowsy Chaperone –March 26-28, 2010
Welcome to the new musical comedy with the most 2006 Tony Awards® of any musical on Broadway! It begins when a die-hard fan plays his favorite cast album, a 1928 smash hit called The Drowsy Chaperone, and the show bursts to life. We are instantly immersed in the glamorous tale of a celebrity bride and her wedding day, complete with thrills and surprises that take the cast and audience soaring into the rafters!
Stomp –April 16-18, 2010
This international percussion sensation with new full-scale routines uses everything but conventional percussion instruments—matchboxes, brooms, garbage cans, Zippo lighters, hubcaps—to fill the stage with magnificent rhythm.
The Wizard of Oz –May 14-16, 2010
The entire family will be captivated as they travel over the rainbow with Dorothy and her friends in this lavish production, featuring breathtaking special effects, dazzling choreography and classic songs.
