Movie Cars: Cinematic stars on wheels and movie nights at the auto museum

Movie Cars: Cinematic Stars on Wheels will be showcased in an exhibit at the National Automobile Museum, The Harrah Collection, in downtown Reno.

Monthly Movie Nights, featuring many of the cars in the Cinematic Stars on Wheels exhibit, will now run through March 25. Special movie night pricing is $10 for both entrance to the Museum and the featured film. Movie nights begin at 5:30 p.m. to provide plenty of time to enjoy the Museum and the special Movie Cars exhibit before the film starts at 7 p.m.

On Thurs., Jan., 28, 2010 see the American thriller “Bullitt” starring Steve McQueen, Robert Vaughn and Jacqueline Bisset.

The movie is probably best remembered for its car chase scene through the streets of San Francisco which is regarded as one of the most influential car chase sequences in movie history. In 2007, “Bullitt” was selected for preservation in the U.S. National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”

“Rebel Without a Cause” starring James Dean and Natalie Wood will be shown on, Thurs. Feb. 25, 2010. The landmark juvenile-delinquent drama details trouble and trauma during a 24-hour period. Movie goers will be able to see the 1949 Mercury used in this film, which is in the Museum's collection.

Thurs., March 25, 2010 enjoy an Italian dinner and see “The Italian Job” starring Charlize Theron and Mark Wahlberg. In the movie, a gang of robbers create the largest traffic jam in Los Angeles history to pull off a theft of gold bullion. They make their getaway in Mini Coopers which are small enough to drive on sidewalks. Special pricing, including dinner, is $20 for the March event.

Five cars from the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles will join eight National Automobile Museum Cinematic Stars on Wheels for the special exhibit. Some of the most famous movie car stars in the exhibit from the Petersen Automotive Museum include:

· The 1966 “Mongrel T” Custom Roadster by George Barris and used in the 1967 Elvis Presley film Easy Come Easy Go.

· The 1946 Ford “Grease Lightning” hot rod was used in the movie Grease, starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John.

· The 1998 VW Beetle “Shagmobile” was in the Mike Myers film, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me.

· The 2002 Jaguar XKR featured in Die Another Day starring Pierce Brosnan and Halle Berry.

· The sassy pink Honda S2000 seen in 2 Fast 2 Furious, starring Eva Mendez, Paul Walker and “Ludacris.”

Cars from the National Automobile Museum include:

· The 1912 Rambler that was in the film Titanic, starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio.

· The Museum's 1910 Sterns was used as a pattern for a car built forTitanic.

· The 1960 Flying Caduceus which had a cameo role in The World's Fastest Indian starring Anthony Hopkins.

· The 1938 Phantom Corsair featured in the 1938 film The Young In Heart featuring Janet Gaynor and Douglas Fairbanks.

· The 1892 Philion featured in both the 1942 film, the Magnificent Ambersons starring Joseph Cotton and Agnes Moorhead and the 1951 film Excuse My Dust featuring Red Skelton.

· The 1949 Mercury seen in the 1955 film, Rebel Without a Cause starring James Dean.

· A 1948 Tucker as seen in the 1988 film Tucker The Man & His Dream starring Jeff Bridges

The National Automobile Museum is open Mon. – Sat. from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Sun. from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Museum admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and $4 for children 6 to 18 years.
