What began with just 20 balloons in 1982 has grown to showcase more than 100 balloons and pilots from as far away as Auckland, New Zealand. On average, 140,000 spectators from all over the world come to share in the wonder of this three-day event. One of the last free events, the Great Reno Balloon Race is a city treasure.
The 2008 event had an estimated 175,000 fans in attendance over the three-day period. The World's Largest Pajama Party was introduced to the event in 2008, and the vendor area included a food court and more than triple the usual offerings.
The crowds continue to come out for the Dawn Patrol, which takes off at, you guessed it, dawn. It's one of the most spectacular sights with the glowing balloons highlighting the darkened sky.
Whether you are a photographer or a spectator, the event is not to be missed for its beauty and spectacle.
