The National Championship Air Races
Annual event showcases the fastest machines on earth
Prepare for takeoff: The National Championship Air Races will set your heart soaring. Held at the Stead Airfield just outside Reno's city limits for the last 47 years, the Air Races annually attract hundreds of thousands of spectators to the fastest show on earth. This year's event will be held Sept. 16-20.
Planes in six classes race for bragging rights, with some reaching speeds upward of 500 mph. Fans have a chance to not only watch the races, but to get up close and personal with the planes when they visit the pits. Talk to the pilots, get pictures of the amazing aircraft and immerse yourself into the event like no other.
The race theme for the 2009 event will be 'Wings of Honor' in recognition of the 100th anniversary of the world's first air race in France and the 46th Annual National Championship Air Races. As part of the festivities, race officials also announced the return of fan favorite, the United States Navy Blue Angels Demonstration Team.
During the event there are also displays of aerobatic prowess, with pilots doing death-defying stunts that thrill the crowds. Military static displays and demonstrations also happen daily.
