Learn to kayak from the best at Reno River Festival
Different Strokes Kayaking offers free whitewater clinics May 10-11
Not only is the Reno River Festival a chance to see the best kayakers in the world go head to head in some fierce whitewater competition, it’s also a chance for spectators to get a little wet and wild during the free whitewater clinics provided by Different Strokes Kayaking (DSK).
From beginner-level courses to advanced techniques and classes for those with mobility and sight impairments, attendees can learn from the best at the Truckee River Whitewater Park in the heart of downtown Reno.
The following is a list of clinics that will take place over the course of the weekend:
BEGINNER-LEVEL
Never Ever: This beginner-level clinic provides boaters with a basic overview of whitewater skills and maneuvers, terminology and safety techniques.
INTERMEDIATE
Roll Session: Learn to roll a kayak, considered the most important technique in whitewater kayaking, during this introductory session.
Rolling and Bracing: Kayakers work on stabilization technique while further developing rolling skills. Eddy Line Techniques: Basic maneuvers such as peel-outs, eddy turns, ferrying and sturns are introduced to boaters.
ADVANCED
Intro to Playboating: Kayakers learn freestyle boating maneuvers such as squirts, nose stands, flat spins and front surfing during this advanced clinic.
Advanced Techniques: Veteran kayakers learn perfecting techniques in this course taught by highly skilled boaters.
SPECIAL ACCESS
Mobility Impaired: River Festival attendees with mobility impairments of all types learn to navigate the Truckee River Whitewater Park in an inflatable kayak.
Sight/Motor Skill Impaired: Boaters having sight or impaired motor skills raft the river with DSK pros during this special access clinic.
The Truckee River Whitewater Park is located just blocks from Reno’s 24-hour gaming excitement and other attractions including golf, skiing, hiking and bike trails, lakes and a selection of art museums and galleries.
