A successful artist looks back on the summer of his defining year, when, as a troubled art student, he befriended an elderly, alcoholic genius painter who had turned his back on life. The two developed a tenuous relationship and gave one another the priceless gift of seeing art and experience through each other's eyes. The late Doug Coombs is often described as the greatest big mountain skier of his time and he is the central figure of Steep, a documentary about adventure, athleticism and the pursuit of a perfect moment on skis. Just days after being filmed for Steep, Coombs died in a skiing accident. His rich life and tragic death reveal the essential questions at the heart of big mountain skiing.
