Barcadia, or xBarcadiax, is a Reno straight edge band that focuses on hardcore. Its six members are: Ben Gibson on drums, Brandon Hickok and Mike Cox on vocals, Jeff Spurlock on the bass, and Stephen Corrales and Drew Valdez on the guitar.
What to expect If you’re in the mood to get thrashed around or release some pent up aggression, this is the band to see.
“People get crazy at our shows, beat the living hell out of each other, spill a little blood and come out the front doors at the end of the night hugging each other.” Cox said. “There’s definitely a lot of aggression being released but there is also a lot of fun being had and that's what matters most.” So, it would be safe to say you can expect a mosh pit and a whole lot of screaming at a Barcadia show.
Background It’s pretty amusing how Barcadia got their name. It actually has to do with another local hardcore band that’s very big in Reno, called Dorcia. “There’s a scene in the movie American Psycho where the main character takes a girl to a restaurant. He lies to her and says they’re at Dorsia, a much more expensive and exclusive restaurant. The woman’s so out of it because of her medication that she fails to realize the main character has actually taken her to a restaurant called Barcadia. We chose our name to playfully spite the local band Dorcia. I'm hoping they got the joke,” Cox laughs.
Inspirations Since Barcadia is a hardcore band, it’s no surprise their inspirations come from other hardcore bands, including Blood For Blood, Hatebreed, and Chokehold. However, Barcadia considers themselves fairly original, and doesn’t rely on other musicians to create their angry sound.
Upcoming shows Barcadia will be playing a show 7 p.m. April 17 at the American Legion Hall, 877 Ralston Street, with the band Rhinoceros.
“We're a straight edge band but don't let that turn you off to us because we're all very open-minded and very willing to talk to and hang out with anyone who comes to our shows,” Cox said.
