The University of Nevada, Reno is offering short courses for teacher recertification, professional development and personal interests for Spring 2008.

Courses are taught on the University campus and at sites throughout Nevada, often via telecourses. The University Credit Across Nevada (UCAN) office at Extended Studies administers these programs and offers the following courses for the Fall 2007 semester.

Selection and Acquisition of Library Materials

Feb. 8-April 26, 2008
Eight select Friday/Saturday sessions

Part of a seven-course series for those seeking public librarian certification through the Nevada State Library and Archives, or a school library/media services endorsement through the Nevada Department of Education, this course will discuss the theories, principles and practices of selecting books and other library materials with particular emphasis on public, special and school libraries. In addition to public librarian certification and library/media services endorsement candidates, participants seeking to learn about or upgrade their current knowledge of work in public or school libraries may also find this course of interest.

This class is intended for pre-service and in service teachers at all levels who are seeking an overview of issues relevant to making the needs of Latin students an integral part of curricular and instructional planning.

Cottage languages and Engish-as-a-Third-Language issues are other possible topics addressed. Interested program coordinators, specialists and administrators are also welcome.

History, Culture, Politics and Society in Turkey: Summer Study Tour to Turkey
(HIST 498/698, PSC 407i/607i or SOC 497/697)
June 8-23, 2008 (with April 2008 pre-trip meeting)

Designed to provide a rich historical and cultural experience through intense study, including lectures and fieldtrips, this summer study tour to Turkey will be based at Koç University in Istanbul and is offered by the University of Nevada, Reno’s departments of history, political science and sociology.

A pre-trip meeting will be held in April 2008. The group will convene in Istanbul, June 8, 2008, and disband in Istanbul, June 23, 2008. Course fee: $2,500, includes dormitory accommodations in Istanbul and breakfast each day, tuition for three undergraduate or graduate credits, airport shuttle service in Istanbul, local transportation and admission to museums and attractions for weekday fieldtrips, textbook and course materials (airfare is not included).

Topics in Basque Cultural Studies: Basques in 'The Sweet Promised Land’

This class utilizes Nevada author Robert Laxalt’s widely acclaimed memoir, Sweet Promised Land, as a window through which to explore the experiences of a father and son in both Nevada and the Basque Country, and the processes that shaped their changing sense of belonging and self.

Special Topics: World of Travel and Tourism I: Air Travel and Travel in the U.S. and Canada

April 5-6, 2008

This course will cover the basics of air travel, use of the Official Airline Guide (OAG), flight itineraries and reading airline tickets. Included will be an overview of travel in the U.S. and Canada, and geographic factors affecting travel such as climate, land surfaces, time zones and cultural differences. Destinations such as Alaska, the Canadian Rockies, French Canada, New England, the Gulf Coast and the Southwest will be emphasized.

Independent Research: Mythology and Folklore — Modern Folklore and the West

April 11-12, 2008

In this third in a series of three Mythology and Folklore classes under the same course number, Nevada legends, conspiracy theories, Internet folklore and urban legends are just a few of the topics to be covered.

(Enrollment in the first two classes is not a requirement to participate.)

This course will deal with modern forms of folklore with a special emphasis on Nevada and the West. Students will learn about how oral tradition and belief affect modern American culture, and they will examine how folklore unfolded with the founding and development of Nevada. Students will be required to write a paper based on a mythology/folklore research topic.

The basics of cultural tourism will be covered, focusing on travel experiences that are conducted with respect for the ways of the world’s diverse cultures. Tourism’s negative and positive impacts on unique local groups, particularly in developing countries, will be discussed. Geographic factors that have an impact on travel, such as climate, topography, cultural differences and political and economic stability, are included. Major tourist destinations such as archaeological sites in the Middle East, the Holy Land and Egypt, and the animal preserves in Africa are emphasized.

Special Topics Workshop: Art of Encouragement

As a result of active participation in this experiential workshop and successful completion of course requirements, students will learn to define the concepts of self-esteem and encouragement, explore personal levels of self-esteem, understand encouraging strategies for self and others, and learn effective use of communication skills.
