Top places to play pool in Reno
Queen Latifah, Nov. 23
Juliette and the Licks, Dec. 1

Outdoorsmen rejoice: Cabela's opens Nov. 16
Cabela's I was face to face with the giant beast, it stared me down, mouth agape, eyes shining, teeth flashing. I knew the lion could take me out in two seconds flat, all things considered. I had never been so close to such a ferocious animal, and I knew, had we met in the wild, I was toast. Fortunately, I didn't have to go on Safari to Africa to admire this great beast; I was standing in front of a diorama of stuffed game at Cabela's in Verdi.

The new store, slated to open Nov. 16, is located next to Boomtown off I-80 West, and features 125,000 square feet of retail space, including a general store, shooting gallery, restaurant, 26,000 gallons of fish tank, safari and mountain animal dioramas and more. Where else could someone in Northern Nevada size up these exotic animals -- the natural world's greatest competitors, but at Cabela's?

Feeling like Fast Eddie? Find Reno's top four places to rack 'em ... plus one to avoid
Top pool spots in RenoIf you're like me and enjoy playing pool at a place that doesn't break your bank account in half, then you'll appreciate this article. Here are what I consider to be the top four places in Reno to play cheap pool, including the top No. 1 spot not to play, for those of you who appreciate fair warning.

No. 4: The Grand Sierra Resort 2500 E. Second St. (775) 789-2000
In the bowling alley at the Grand Sierra Resort are a couple of small pool tables in the corner of the room, right next to the ever-so-fabulous snack bar. These tables are fun to play at because they're in an intimate location that gives you and your friends your own little spot to hang, not to mention, you can pull a big ol' two-in-one, and go bowling when you're done with your games. I've learned the Grand Sierra is somewhere you just can't go wrong.

Juliette and the Licks to perform at downtown Reno's Club Underground Dec. 1
Julio Iglesias at Silver LegacyJuliette Lewis and the Licks with special guests, Scissors for Lefty, and Suffrajett will perform Dec. 1 at Club Underground, 555 E. Fourth St.

"The prototype for a female is they're desirable, pretty to look at, predictable and safe," says actress-turned-musician Juliette Lewis. "That's why my music is so important to me -- it's the antithesis of that, it breaks the mold."

Such a statement should come as little surprise to anyone who has been caught up in the full heat and sweat of a Licks' live performance. This very forum, the stage, is the ideal setting to witness Lewis emanate the same elemental energy and disregard for convention she's done her whole life.

As the mountains change, so do I
Reno 360

Reno.com editor Megg Mueller writes Reno 360º, a blog for those who love Reno and aren't afraid to admit it.

It's almost time to pack away the mountain bike and wax up the skis. Is it too much to hope that the recent wet weather is really a sign of things to come this year? I'm looking at the rain falling right now, and all I can say is I hope it is.

Last year was my first back in the area after a decade away, and I have to say I was pretty disappointed with our ski season. But I was still new (again) to the joys of Sierra skiing, so I'm not sure how much more I would have made it up even if there was snow. But this year, I'm ready.
