As the mountains change, so do I

Reno 360°: A blog for those who love Reno and aren't afraid to admit it

It's almost time to pack away the mountain bike and wax up the skis. Is it too much to hope that the recent wet weather is really a sign of things to come this year? I'm looking at the rain falling right now, and all I can say is I hope it is.

Last year was my first back in the area after a decade away, and I have to say I was pretty disappointed with our ski season. But I was still new (again) to the joys of Sierra skiing, so I'm not sure how much more I would have made it up even if there was snow. But this year, I'm ready. I've been mountain biking since March with the greatest group of folks, all of whom seem to switch to skiing and boarding when the snow flies.

I figure if it translates for them, surely it will for me, right? The cultures of the two sports seems pretty similar; both are enjoyed by rabid yet laid-back people. Fanatic in their quest for the best run, yet just as excited about the beers and conversation afterward, these mountain nomads were just what I was looking for when I moved back. Now if only I can learn to be half as good as they are, on the bike or the slopes, I'll be a happy girl.
