Looking for a place to take the kids? Top five kid-friendly spots in Reno
Now that it's getting cooler outside, the question "What am I going to do with the kids now that Wild Island is closed?" is bound to come up. Here are five of the best places to take the kiddies when the air is crisp and the beach is put on the backburner for the season.
No. 5 - Virginia and Truckee Railroad: This is one of those activities that, although shut down during the winter, is a great place to begin your autumn. If you visit Virginia City and you have a kid, it's a requirement to take him/her on the Virginia and Truckee Railroad. Riding in a boxcar pulled by a real steam engine, the half-hour train ride goes from Virginia City to Gold Hill and back, exploring some of the old mines and covering the history of the region. Of course, for most kids, the thrill is that they're on a train, and you don't really have to do anything but let them holler with joy while staring contentedly out the window.

Reno's Truckee River Arts District: Gathering place day and night
The north section of Reno's Truckee River Arts District is the place where a multi-million dollar whitewater park runs through a rapidly evolving corridor of hip restaurants, cafes, lounges, museums and specialty shops.
In recent months, new eateries and night spots have opened near the river's edge; all part of a colorful urban rebirth that has made the district a hub for locals and visitors day and night. These unique businesses are located within walking distance of 6,000 hotel rooms, downtown casinos and the Reno Events Center, which hosts some of the biggest names in music.

Back to school, back to fall ... back to basics

Reno.com editor Megg Mueller writes Reno 360º, a blog for those who love Reno and aren't afraid to admit it.
Tonight is back-to-school night at Damonte Ranch High School. My daughter, Molly, is a junior there, so I will be sitting in those little seats tonight, trying not to fidget, hoping to impress the teacher with my eager smile.
Good lord, was I always such a suck up??
Definitely not when I was the kid, back when my daughters tell me my hair was big enough to be a satellite dish. But now as the mom, I am totally hoping my kids' teachers like me. I'm hoping they'll see that I'm committed to my children's education, even if I do prefer to converse by e-mail. And I want them to see that even though she's almost out of school, I'm still here.

Thanks to all who came out to the Great Reno Balloon Race!
reno.com would like to say thank you to everyone who came out to the 2007 Great Reno Balloon Race. As the official information booth and once again a Major sponsor, this is one of our favorite events. With record attendance, we're guessing it's one of your favorites, too. We also appreciate everyone who purchased the program this year; proceeds from those sales went to help the Northern Nevada Make-A-Wish Foundation. We'll see you next year at the Race; look for the bright gold sweatshirts!
