Sup - Great food that feels like home

Food Bites: A blog about Reno’s dining and restaurant scene

September 17, 2007

Thank god for Sup. Where has this place been all my life?

Sup is brand new, and much like the Cheeseboard & Wine Cellar. It’s small, healthy, delicious, and only open for lunch. It’s a classy little deli that serves nothing but soup, sandwiches, and salads. They also have some other fun snacks and drinks, like Pellegrino, Capri Suns, and homemade cookies.

Feel like broccoli cheddar soup? How about something richer, like crab bisque or Thai coconut shrimp? You got it, and everything in between, including chicken tortilla soup, vichyssoise, curry cucumber yogurt, pork enchilada, steak chili, pork jambalaya, and heirloom tomato gazpacho. It doesn’t get much better…especially not here.

Sup is one of those places that’s contributing to the “make Reno nicer” idea that’s actually starting to work. And, as far as lunch foods are concerned, this place takes the cake. Salads on the menu range from a perfectly prepared flat iron steak salad, a Caesar salad, and a house salad that has uplifted the appetites of many. Yes, that’s right. It’s gooood, really good.

As for sandwiches, there’s a tasty Portobello mushroom one that comes with eggplant, fontina cheese, and hummus, a sandwich that basically screams, "Wild Oats!” Also available is a char-grilled steak baguette, a club sandwich, and a pesto turkey sandwich on jalapeno jack bread.

The inside of Sup is very modern and classy, decorated with black mirrors over red and yellow walls. Water and utensils are all serve yourself, and if you’d like, you can even grab a little sign that says you’re willing to share your table of four with others, if the place packs up too fast.

Prices are high, but well worth it, ranging from $7 soups to $8 sandwiches. And the best part about this place? They frequently offer free samples of soup and cookies for you to try while you’re waiting for your food. Feels just like home, but more crowded.
