Pilot dies while practicing for Championship Air Races

Races proceed as planned despite loss to Air Race family

September 12, 2007

Former Navy fighter pilot Steve Dari, of Lemon Grove, Calif., died in a plane crash following a test flight 6:10 p.m. Sept. 11 at Reno Stead field 8 miles north of Reno.

The National Championship Air Races official relase about Dari's crash called Dari ,"An experienced biplane racer who started his career air racing in 2003 in the Formula One Class. He then moved to the Biplane Class winning top finishes in the Biplane Silver Class in 2004 through 2006. Steve will be remembered for this love of flying and passion for air racing. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to his wife, Margaret, his family, friends and air race fans."

Dari, a business consultant, was flying a biplane known as the Rose Peregrine, owned by David Rose. Dari published an article, "Reno and Back" about his Formula One racing experience in 2003. He also flew F-14s and a plane referred to as Redhead.

Witnesses reported Dari experienced what appeared to be engine trouble during and just after takeoff, as smoke and perhaps flames were seen coming out of the plane right before it went down just off the end of the runway. Dari was killed on impact.

The race will continue as planned with a moment of silence observed for Dari.
