Food Bites: A blog about Reno’s dining and restaurant scene

Nestled inside an office complex next to the airport is Albitas Mexican Restaurant. If you've ever been to one of the Cal-Mex places around town (think Qdoba, Bajio, or Kokopelli's), you'll recognize the system. The food preparation is the same, in that you start by ordering your meal, they warm the tortilla in front of you, put the meat on, then put some toppings on it while you watch. However, there are two important differences between Albitas and your standard chain Cal-Mex place:

1. They're not serving Cal-Mex. You won't see any pine nuts or other yuppie toppings.

2. The atmosphere in Albitas is similar to a dive hamburger joint, with plain-tiled floors, old tables, and bland decorations.

The food is traditional Mexican, the portions are generous, and the taste is simply enjoyable. If you're looking for a working man's Mexican restaurant that isn't fast food and isn't a traditional sit down place, this is definitely for you. It does get very crowded during lunch, however, so arrive early if you can.
